Structural Research Engineers

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTech) is an infrastructure-centered firm focusing on practice, research, policy, and technology transfer. HPTech was established in 2003 with the primary purpose of serving the U.S. federal government at their facilities and project sites. Our uniqueness lies in our ability to integrate physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, planning, and policy when developing and delivering infrastructure solutions.

HPTech is currently pursuing a major federal contract, and we are identifying candidates who would be interested in working with us should we be awarded the contract. The position is responsible for conducting research in bridge engineering, including both concrete and steel bridges, in a state-of-the-art laboratory at a government facility.

  • Identify challenges and opportunities in the materials, design, and construction of bridges aimed at designing and constructing bridges that are safer, economical, and longer-lasting.

  • Develop large-scale detailed and comprehensive experimental plans. These experiments may simulate full-scale structural elements of a bridge superstructure or substructure in the laboratory.

  • Develop instrumentation plans including a variety of data acquisition systems and sensors such as strain gauges, accelerometers, tiltmeters, potentiometers, linear variable differential transducers, extensometers, and load cells.

  • Setup and conduct large-scale experimental tests involving operation of closed-loop servovalve controlled hydraulic systems. The structural elements or systems may be tested up to their failure point.

  • Conduct material property tests on materials used in the experiments, which may be steel, concrete, composites, or other materials.

  • Monitor experiments and systematically acquire data, which may continue for weeks or months.

  • Compare experimental data with analytical models.

  • Participate in developing recommendations for specification and standard setting organizations, like AASHTO and ASTM, to update and revise their specifications and standards, based on the findings of research.

  • Participate in forensic investigations utilizing metallography, fractography, petrography, image analysis, and other techniques.

  • Write publication-ready research reports.

  • Write papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Make presentations at conferences, seminars, workshops, and other professional meetings.

  • Participate in demonstration projects showcasing innovations in materials, design, and construction of bridges.

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, or Bridge Engineering.

  • 5 years of related experience.

  • Experience in the use of latest software in the design, analysis, and modeling of bridges, including finite element modeling (FEM).

  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills.

  • Excellent team and collaborative skills.

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration highly desirable.

These anticipated positions, which are contingent upon the contract award to HPTech, would be based in McLean, Virginia.
