Senior Structural Engineer - Concrete

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTech) is an infrastructure-centered firm focusing on practice, research, policy, and technology transfer.  HPTech was established in 2003 with the primary purpose of serving the U.S. federal government at their facilities and project sites.  Our uniqueness lies in our ability to integrate physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, planning, and policy when developing and delivering infrastructure solutions.

HPTech is currently pursuing a task order under a major federal contract, and we are identifying candidates who would be interested in working with us should we be awarded the task order.  The position is responsible for developing design guidelines, and developing and delivering workshops on the application of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) in the maintenance and repair (M&R) of bridges.


  • Develop guidelines and specifications for the design and construction of UHPC-based M&R strategies.

  • Develop and deliver workshops, both in-person and online, for the design and construction of UHPC-based M&R strategies.

  • Facilitate and moderate meetings, conferences, workshops, and other information exchange events that involve managerial and technical personnel of federal, state, and local transportation agencies and transportation industry representatives.

  • Provide technical assistance to state and local transportation agencies on a variety of bridge design, construction, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation issues.

  • Write reports.

  • Write papers for journals and magazines.

  • Make presentations at conferences and other technical events.


  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Civil, Structural, or Bridge Engineering.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of bridge design, maintenance, and construction practices, with particular knowledge of the state-of-the practice for bridge maintenance and repair.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load Resistance Factored Design (LRFD) Bridge Design Specifications (BDS)

  • Comprehensive knowledge of properties, behavior, and characteristic of UHPC-class materials, and experience designing bridge structures that incorporate UHPC-class materials.

  • Knowledgeable of how UHPC is used as a maintenance and repair solution for highway bridges.

  • Extensive experience working with states, federal and local transportation agencies

  • Extensive experience developing and delivering technical education/training and outreach activities to states, federal and local transportation agencies.

  • Experience deploying innovative technologies to bridge owners (DOT’s, or local agencies) and design practitioners.

  • Demonstrated capability to convey content on each of the following items: bridge design; bridge maintenance and repair; structural strengthening; bridge construction and inspection; specifications/special provisions for innovative materials and construction activities; UHPC materials; UHPC for maintenance and repair of bridges; UHPC in field construction; UHPC applications for highway infrastructure.

  • At least 10 years of experience in bridge design practice.

  • Active professional engineer (P.E.) license.

This anticipated position, which is contingent upon the task order award to HPTech, would be based in Washington DC metro area.
