Senior Asphalt Technician

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTech) is an infrastructure-centered firm focusing on practice, research, policy, and technology transfer.  HPTech was established in 2003 with the primary purpose of serving the U.S. federal government at their facilities and project sites.  Our uniqueness lies in our ability to integrate physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, planning, and policy when developing and delivering infrastructure solutions.

 

​HPTech is currently pursuing a task order under a major federal contract, and we are identifying candidates who would be interested in working with us should we be awarded the task order.  At this stage, we are looking for a  Senior Asphalt Technician who will be responsible for assisting Asphalt Research Engineers in the execution of research projects and for maintaining a state-of-the-art Asphalt Binder and Mixtures Laboratory (ABML) at a government facility. The ABML investigates the physical properties of paving materials, including strength, stiffness, and ductility.  The laboratory also validates and advances emerging test methods.  The research performed in the laboratory forms the basis for developing and advancing materials specifications that improve the durability, longevity, quality, and cost-effectiveness of pavements.

The duties of the Senior Asphalt Technician include directing research technicians, installing/calibrating/maintaining laboratory equipment, installing/maintaining software for specialized laboratory equipment, operating heavy equipment (overhead cranes, forklifts, etc.), performing standardized materials tests, operating servovalve hydraulic or pneumatic equipment, setting up, operating, and troubleshooting rheometers, spectrometers, viscometers, asphalt solvent extraction and recovery equipment, setting up load frames, sensors and data acquisition systems, and preparing samples of asphalt binders and mixtures.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology. B.S. degree in Civil Engineering preferred.

  • 12 years of experience in an asphalt research laboratory.

  • Experience with the use of a laboratory information management systems software (LIMS).

  • Experienced with all relevant AASHTO and ASTM standards.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in aggregate and asphalt technology.

  • Excellent verbal, and writing skills.

  • Excellent team and collaborative skills.

  • NICET Level IV certification highly desirable.

This anticipated position, which is contingent upon the task order award to HPTech, would be based in McLean, Virginia.
