Research Psychologist

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTech) is an infrastructure-centered firm focusing on practice, research, policy, and technology transfer.  HPTech was established in 2003 with the primary purpose of serving the U.S. federal government at their facilities and project sites.  Our uniqueness lies in our ability to integrate physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, planning, and policy when developing and delivering infrastructure solutions.

HPTech is currently pursuing an upcoming major federal contract, and we are identifying candidates who would be interested in working with us should we be awarded the contract.  At this stage, we are looking for a Research Psychologist who will be responsible for planning and conducting human factors research, as it relates to highway safety and operations, at a state-of-the-art government facility. The research is focused on improving transportation safety by strengthening the understanding of user needs, and making recommendations for roadway design, signage, and advanced transportation technologies, with a goal of reducing transportation-related fatalities and injuries across the transportation system. The human factors research facility includes a Virtual Reality (VR) Laboratory, a Highway Driving Simulator (HDS), a miniSim™ Driving Simulator, a Highway Sign Design and Research Facility, and several Field Research Vehicles (FRV).

Qualifications

  • An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in engineering psychology, experimental psychology, human factors, or a closely related field. 

  • At least 5 years of progressively related and responsible research experience in transportation safety and operations. This includes driver behavior (distraction, fatigue, impairment), connected and automated vehicles incorporating advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving systems (ADS), and simulation research.

  • Excellent team and collaborative skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in designing real-time scenarios of highway systems to conduct human factors research.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing, designing, and conducting behavioral research related to transportation safety and operations. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in statistical analyses, including the use of statistical analysis software packages.

  • Record of published peer-reviewed journal articles and research reports, and conference presentations.

  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills.

This anticipated position, which is contingent upon the contract award to HPTech, would be based in McLean, Virginia.
