Pavement Test Facility Research Engineer

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTech) is an infrastructure-centered firm focusing on practice, research, policy, and technology transfer.  HPTech was established in 2003 with the primary purpose of serving the U.S. federal government at their facilities and project sites.  Our uniqueness lies in our ability to integrate physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, planning, and policy when developing and delivering infrastructure solutions.

HPTech is currently pursuing a task order on a major federal contract, and we are identifying candidates who would be interested in working with us should we be awarded the task order.  At this stage, we are looking for a Pavement Test Facility Research Engineer (PTF-RE) who will be responsible for planning and conducting research on full-scale pavements at a state-of-the-art government-owned Pavement Test Facility (PTF).  The PTF uses accelerated testing of full-scale pavement structures to evaluate the performance of new materials, new design and construction practices, and new quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) test procedures.  In the past, the PTF has supported numerous studies contributing to the development and verification of new specifications, designs, and test procedures for both rigid and flexible pavements.

The PTF-RE shall be responsible for planning and conducting full-scale pavement tests at the PTF under a variety of loading and environmental conditions.  The candidate must have demonstrated research experience in the testing and analysis of pavement systems. This includes testing of pavement structures, modeling of pavement structures, prediction of in-service performance, testing of pavement materials, and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of pavement structures. The candidate must be capable of presenting during demonstration projects, seminars, webinars, scientific meetings, and workshops.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Civil Engineering (e.g. Pavements, Materials, Geotechnical), Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.

  • At least 5 years of research experience related to testing and analysis of pavements.

  • Capable of performing in-situ tests to assess the condition of pavements using techniques such as Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD).

  • Experience in the instrumentation and monitoring of pavements using a variety of sensors, including strain gages, moisture sensors, dynamic pressure cells, and soil strain gauges.

  • Experience in the use of latest software in the design, analysis, and modeling of pavements.

  • Capable of performing numerical modeling of pavement structures using finite element, finite difference, and discrete element methods.

  • Record of published peer-reviewed journal articles and research reports, and conference presentations.

  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills.

  • Excellent team and collaborative skills.

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration highly desirable.

This anticipated position, which is contingent upon the task order award to HPTech, would be based in McLean, Virginia.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
