NDE Research Engineers

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTech) is an infrastructure-centered firm focusing on practice, research, policy, and technology transfer.  HPTech was established in 2003 with the primary purpose of serving the U.S. federal government at their facilities and project sites.  Our uniqueness lies in our ability to integrate physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, planning, and policy when developing and delivering infrastructure solutions.

HPTech is currently pursuing a major federal contract, and we are identifying candidates who would be interested in working with us should we be awarded the contract. The position is responsible for conducting research in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and structure health monitoring (SHM) of bridges in a state-of-the-art laboratory at a government facility.

Responsibilities

  • Identify challenges and opportunities in the NDE and SHM of bridges aimed at the development and application of NDE and SHM technologies that are safer, faster, and least invasive.

  • Develop detailed and comprehensive research and testing plans related to validation and implementation of various NDE and SHM technologies.  These experiments may be conducted in the laboratory or on bridges in the field.

  • Develop instrumentation plans for both laboratory and field studies.

  • Operate common NDE tools and technologies.

  • Install sensors and instrumentation in both laboratory and in the field.

  • Monitor experiments and systematically acquire data, using data acquisition systems, which may continue for weeks or months.

  • Calibrate and operate various NDE and SHM tools and sensors.

  • Examine concrete and steel structures and evaluate material properties using NDE/SHM techniques both in the laboratory and in the field.

  • Interpret and evaluate test results of NDE and SHM techniques in accordance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, or procedures.

  • Participate in forensic investigations utilizing various NDE and SHM technologies.

  • Develop bridge preservation plans based on the timely application of NDE and SHM technologies.

  • Conduct life-cycle cost analysis of bridges incorporating the cost of the application of NDE and SHM technologies.

  • Write publication-ready research reports.

  • Write papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Make presentations at conferences, seminars, workshops, and other professional meetings.

  • Participate in demonstration projects showcasing innovations in NDE and SHM technologies.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in civil engineering, mechatronics engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer Science.

  • 5 years of related experience.

  • Experience in NDE/SHM data analysis, visualization and interpretation.

  • Experience in the use of visualization techniques to detect/map flaws.

  • Experience in the use of latest software in NDE/SHM technologies.

  • Experience in deterioration modeling of bridges and bridge management systems.

  • Understanding of and familiarity with standards and specifications related to NDE/SHM.

  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills.

  • Excellent team and collaborative skills.

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration highly desirable.
