Geotechnical/Soils Technician

HPTech currently has immediate opportunity for a geotechnical/soils technician responsible for conducting a variety of laboratory and field tests, and maintaining a state-of-the-art geotechnical laboratory.


  • Set up tests, install instrumentation, conduct tests, and acquire data.

  • Perform at least basic level of data analysis.

  • Perform standard geotechnical laboratory tests per ASTM and AASHTO procedures. These include ASTM procedures D3080, D6638, D4253, D6637, D4595, D5321, D4632, D2487, D7181, D698, D1557, D4767, D2216, D2435, D422, D3744, G187, C802, C1067, D4253, D4254, D5084, D75, C117, C127, C136, C702, and AASHTO procedures 27, T 88, T 89, T 90, R 90, T 99, T 180, T 215, T 272, T 288, T 289, T 290, T 307.

  • Setup and conduct full-scale or scaled experimental tests involving operation of servo-hydraulic test equipment among others.

  • Conduct load testing of foundations.

  • Monitor experiments and systematically acquire data.

  • Review and synthesize literature on various geotechnical topics.


  • Completion of at least two years of technical training in engineering technician skills, computer science, or electronics, and a good level of mechanical aptitude. A B.S. degree is preferred.

  • Knowledge of standard geotechnical monitoring equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience in geotechnical foundation testing techniques.

  • Experience in geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring.

  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills.

  • Excellent team and collaborative skills.


The positions are based in McLean, Virginia.
