Concrete Materials Research Engineer

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTech) is an infrastructure-centered firm focusing on practice, research, policy, and technology transfer.  HPTech was established in 2003 with the primary purpose of serving the U.S. federal government at their facilities and project sites.  Our uniqueness lies in our ability to integrate physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, planning, and policy when developing and delivering infrastructure solutions.

HPTech is currently pursuing an upcoming major federal contract, and we are identifying candidates who would be interested in working with us should we be awarded the contract.  At this stage, we are looking for a Concrete Materials Research Engineer (CMRE) who will be responsible for planning and conducting concrete materials research, related to bridges and pavements, in a state-of-the-art concrete laboratory at a government facility. The Concrete Laboratory conducts research in many areas related to concrete materials, such as fly ash, slag cement, and alternative cementitious materials with little or no hydraulic cement. The laboratory also performs research on various concrete deterioration mechanisms, including freezing and thawing damage, sulfate attack, and alkali-silica reaction (ASR).  The laboratory has been involved in the development and evaluation of new test procedures and improvement of existing testing procedures. It has supported the Performance Engineered Mixtures (PEM) initiative by assessing and validating methodologies and criteria.

The CMRE shall have diversified concrete materials research experience, including constituent materials (aggregates, cements, supplementary cementitious materials, and admixtures), fresh and hardened property testing, models and software tools to predict in-service performance, knowledge of and experience in the use of design codes, standard specifications and standard test methods (for example, AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, AASHTO LRFD Bridge Construction Specifications, ASTM C39, ASTM C78, ASTM C150, ASTM C157, ASTM C469, ASTM C496, ASTM C512, ASTM C595, ASTM C1556, ASTM C1585, ASTM C1856, AASHTO TP119, and AASHTO PP84), and ability to operate specialized laboratory equipment.  The candidate must be capable of presenting during demonstration projects, seminars, webinars, scientific meetings, and workshops.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, Bridge Engineering, or related discipline.

  • At least 5 years of concrete materials research experience.

  • Specific experience in concrete, concrete-making materials, and concrete deterioration mechanisms.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in proportioning, mixing, curing, and testing of concrete materials.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in the use of models and software tools to predict in-service performance of concrete structures.

  • In depth knowledge of concrete performance related specifications.

  • Proven ability to develop experimental designs and conduct statistical analyses.

  • Record of published peer-reviewed journal articles and research reports, and conference presentations.

  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills.

  • Excellent team and collaborative skills.

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration highly desirable.

This anticipated position, which is contingent upon the contract award to HPTech, would be based in McLean, Virginia.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
