Chemistry Laboratory Technician

HPTech is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chemistry Laboratory Technician to support advanced laboratory research activities in a state-of-the-art Chemistry Laboratory located at a government research facility. The laboratory conducts fundamental and applied research on highway materials to better understand their desirable and undesirable performance characteristics. Research activities include development of improved analytical methods, evaluation of material composition and behavior, and support for forensic investigations of premature pavement and highway structure failures in collaboration with other laboratories.

The selected candidate will perform a variety of technical tasks to support ongoing laboratory research and testing activities. Responsibilities include maintaining the laboratory in a clean, organized, and safe operating condition; preparing standard analytical solutions and reagents; preparing dispersions of additives such as styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), polyphosphoric acid, and liquid amine antistrip additives in asphalt binders; and preparing samples for spectroscopic and chemical analyses, including crushing, grinding, sieving, and other specimen preparation procedures. Additional responsibilities include operating laboratory instruments, supporting test execution, documenting results, and assisting research staff in maintaining high-quality laboratory operations.

 

​Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related discipline.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in analyzing and characterizing highway construction materials using advanced laboratory techniques.

  • Demonstrated experience with standard chemistry laboratory procedures, including filtration, precise weighing, preparation of solutions, and use of volumetric glassware and automatic pipettes.

  • Demonstrated experience operating advanced analytical instruments such as X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP).

  • Experience with asphalt binder chemistry, cement chemistry, aggregate characterization, or related highway materials analysis highly desirable.

  • Strong verbal, technical writing, and communication skills

  • Strong team-oriented and collaborative abilities​

This position is based in McLean, VA.
