Asphalt Research Engineer
High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTech) is an infrastructure-centered firm focusing on practice, research, policy, and technology transfer. HPTech was established in 2003 with the primary purpose of serving the U.S. federal government at their facilities and project sites. Our uniqueness lies in our ability to integrate physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, planning, and policy when developing and delivering infrastructure solutions.
HPTech is currently pursuing a task order under a major federal contract, and we are identifying candidates who would be interested in working with us should we be awarded the task order. At this stage, we are looking for an Asphalt Research Engineer (ARE) who will be responsible for planning and conducting research in a state-of-the-art Asphalt Binder and Mixtures Laboratory (ABML) at a government facility. The ABML investigates the physical properties of paving materials, including strength, stiffness, and ductility. The laboratory also validates and advances emerging test methods. The research performed in the laboratory forms the basis for developing and advancing materials specifications that improve the durability, longevity, quality, and cost-effectiveness of pavements.
The ARE shall have diversified asphalt binder and mixture research experience, including familiarity with digital-to-analog data acquisition, data management, analysis, and visualization, sensor selection and wiring (strain gauges, accelerometers, potentiometers, linear variable differential transducers, extensometers, and load cells), setup and operation of closed-loop servovalve controlled hydraulic systems, experiments conducted and setup using automated technology, rheometers, viscometers, spectrometers, ductilometers, or in solvent extraction and recovery testing, design of accelerated loading facility sections, and common asphalt property characterization tests of AASHTO and ASTM. The candidate must be capable of presenting during demonstration projects, seminars, webinars, scientific meetings, and workshops.
Qualifications
-
Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering/Science, Chemistry, or related discipline.
-
At least 5 years of research experience related to asphalt binders and mixtures.
-
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in aggregate and asphalt technology.
-
In depth knowledge of binder and mixture performance related specifications.
-
Proven ability to develop experimental designs and conduct statistical analyses.
-
Experience in the use of latest software in the design, analysis, and modeling of flexible pavements.
-
Record of published peer-reviewed journal articles and research reports, and conference presentations.
-
Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills.
-
Excellent team and collaborative skills.
-
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license highly desirable.
This anticipated position, which is contingent upon the task order award to HPTech, would be based in McLean, Virginia.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
